My name is Sarah Melius and I am a mother of 5 living in Newaygo County in Michigan. We’ve recently moved from northern Michigan back to my hometown, Fremont. Our home is one of my favorite places to be! When I’m not spending time at home, I am a supervisor of mental health supporting our local schools. My own needs for community and belonging and my experiences have inspired me to create Mama Tembo LLC with All Mother Doula Services and Third Place. I can’t wait to connect with you and your family!
What’s in the name? Mama “Tembo” translates to mama “elephant” in Swahili. Elephants raise their babies cooperatively. They are considered, “all mothers” because they support one another and raise their young together. With my services, I strive to support moms, families, daycares, and the greater community; it’s my way of being an “all mother”.
In sociology, the term “third place” is utilized to refer to the social surroundings that are separate from the two usual social environments of home (“first place”) and the workplace (“second place”). For us, Third Place was developed to create a barrier-free, productivity-free, social environment that promotes safe spaces in our community for all and pushes to curb the weaponization of lonliness and provide a place of belonging.
I am a birth doula because I have a passion to support mothers. I am excited to work with moms, whether single, married, or coupled, to support and encourage them through their journey while helping them make informed decisions. I will be your “all mother” because as a mom you will quickly learn that you will do so much, but you don’t have to do it alone.
In February 2019, I participated in a DONA certified Birth Doula course through the Center for the Childbearing Year.
